What is a Michelin Star Restaurant?

Michelin Stars

The Michelin Guide is a prestigious culinary guidebook that recognizes the best restaurants and dining experiences around the world, and Istanbul is home to several Michelin Star restaurants.

The Michelin Guide was established by the Michelin brothers Andre and Edouard in around 1889 to encourage people to travel by car and thereby increase sales of their Michelin tires. At first, the guide was free and included information on routes, mechanics, fuel stations, restaurants, and lodgings.

In 1920, the Guide became a paid publication that included restaurant listings categorized by type. In 1926, the Michelin brothers formed a restaurant inspection team of anonymous reviewers, known as “mystery diners,” who would visit and evaluate restaurants using a three-step process, then award stars accordingly.

Top 5 Michelin Star Restaurants in Istanbul

For the first time ever, the Michelin Guide has recognized Istanbul, awarding five restaurants with Michelin stars in the 2023 edition. This marks a historic moment, and it’s expected that in the coming years, more restaurants in Istanbul will receive Michelin stars. Currently, there is one 2-star Michelin restaurant and four 1-star Michelin restaurants in Istanbul.

Editors Note: Before the Michelin Guide started awarding stars to restaurants in Istanbul, I had dined at several 1-star Michelin restaurants in Europe and felt that Istanbul had far better dining options. While I believe that Michelin stars are a great way to recognize excellence in a restaurant, they can also lead to overcrowding and significant price increases. This is why I am unsure if the Michelin stars will have a positive impact on Istanbul. For example, Turk by Fatih Tutak, the 2-star Michelin restaurant, was fully booked for 6 months after receiving the stars. However, just one day before the stars were awarded, it was easy to book a table for a week later.

If you wish to dine at one of these Michelin-starred restaurants, it’s recommended to make a reservation at least 2-3 weeks in advance as they are often fully booked. You might also need some Luck in securing a reservation. Get ready to inspire your visit to Istanbul with these great discoveries!

Nicole Restaurant in Istanbul

In 1901, the present building was built as the Soeurs Garde-Malades (Nursing Sisters) Apartment where Franciscan nuns lived. The building, which also hosted the Levantine and Greek families until the end of the 1920s, had been damaged over the years due to changes in hands and neglect. In the early 2000s, major restoration work started in the district and thus it became the city’s cultural, artistic, entertainment, and gourmet center.

The building has been restored with great respect to its origins, giving it an enchanting appearance. Nicole Restaurant, located on the top floor of the building, is named after one of the former owners of the building, nun Agnés Marthe Nicole.
